BJD Leads District-Wide Protest
A 12-hour bandh called by the Biju Janata Dal in Mayurbhanj district was observed successfully under the leadership of Sudam Marandi. The shutdown, held from 6 AM to 6 PM, witnessed widespread participation across the district.
Protest Over Tragic Incident
The bandh was organized in response to the death of a tribal student allegedly due to consumption of contaminated food, along with more than 150 students falling ill. The incident triggered widespread outrage and concern among local residents.
Key Demands Raised
Protesters demanded a fair and impartial investigation into the incident and strict action against those responsible. They also called for immediate measures to prevent such tragedies in the future. Among the key demands were ₹50 lakh compensation for the victim’s family and a permanent government job for one family member.
Massive Public Support Across District
The bandh received strong public support across all nine assembly constituencies of the district, including Morada, Bangiriposi, Baripada, Udala, Saraskana, Rairangpur, Kashipur, and Karanjia. Government offices, educational institutions, and transport services remained voluntarily closed, reflecting the depth of public sentiment.
Call for Stronger Safety Measures
During the protest, locals expressed deep concern over the safety of tribal students and emphasized the need for stronger administrative monitoring and accountability in welfare institutions.
Leaders and Workers Participate Actively
Several party leaders and workers, including Sananda Marandi, Dr. Priyabrata Majhi, Rajkishore Das, Debashish Marandi, Ganeshwar Patra, Bharati Hansda, Pritinanda Kanungo, Basanti Hembram, and others, actively participated in the protest along with block presidents and district-level workers.
Growing Demand for Accountability
The incident has intensified calls for accountability and systemic reforms to ensure student safety, especially in tribal-dominated regions, with political and public pressure mounting on the administration for swift action.
