A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck Colombia on Monday morning, leaving at least 132 people dead and more than 570 others injured, according to reports. The massive tremor caused widespread damage across several parts of the South American country, with Pereira emerging as one of the worst-affected cities.
Following the earthquake, authorities opened a digital database to help locate people reported missing. More than 2,000 people have reportedly been listed as missing, with the highest number of missing persons reported from Pereira.
18 Health Centres and 52 Schools Damaged
Pereira has suffered significant damage in the earthquake, with authorities confirming at least 60 deaths in the city so far.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake struck at around 7:34 am, with its epicentre located near San José del Palmar in Colombia’s Chocó region. Strong tremors were felt in several parts of the country, including the capital Bogotá.
The powerful shaking triggered panic among residents. Sirens sounded across affected areas as people rushed out of buildings and gathered on the streets for safety.
The earthquake damaged around 1,577 residential houses, while more than 60 buildings and 37 homes were completely destroyed. At least 18 health centres and 52 schools have also been reported damaged.
Rescue and relief operations are underway in the affected areas as emergency teams continue searching for survivors and missing people. Authorities are assessing the full extent of the destruction while providing assistance to displaced families.
The disaster has also drawn international support. The United States government has announced emergency assistance worth $15.5 million for Colombia. The aid is intended to support temporary shelters, food supplies and security measures for people affected by the devastating earthquake.
With thousands of people affected and many still unaccounted for, rescue teams are continuing their search operations. Authorities have urged residents in affected areas to remain cautious as relief and rehabilitation efforts continue.
