13-Year-Old Afghan Boy Survives Dangerous Flight Stunt
In a shocking display of youthful daring, a 13-year-old boy from Kunduz, Afghanistan, survived a perilous flight by hiding in the wheel well of a Kam Air plane traveling from Kabul to Delhi. The incident, which took place on Sunday, left officials stunned, as the boy emerged unharmed after a 94-minute journey through freezing altitudes.
Secret Entry into Kabul Airport
The unnamed boy, previously unknown to authorities, managed to slip into Kabul airport unnoticed and concealed himself in the rear landing gear of flight RQ4401. Upon landing at Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi, around 11 a.m., airline staff discovered him tampering near the aircraft. He was immediately handed over to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) at Terminal 3 for questioning.
Motive: Pure Curiosity
During questioning, the boy revealed that his motive was simple curiosity. “The boy just wanted to see how it was,” a source close to the investigation told TV9. Defying extreme danger, he survived a situation that often proves fatal for stowaways in wheel wells.
Safe Return and Investigation
Following the inquiry, the boy was sent back to Kabul on the same flight, which departed around 12:30 p.m. A security check of the landing gear compartment found a small red speaker, likely belonging to him. Kam Air issued a statement confirming that the plane remained safe to operate.
Dangers of Wheel-Well Stowaways
This incident highlights the extreme hazards of stowing away in aircraft wheel wells. Professionals warn that low temperatures, low oxygen, and high-altitude pressure make survival unlikely. Similar incidents include two fatalities in a JetBlue flight from the Dominican Republic to Florida in January 2024, while a Guatemalan survived a comparable journey to Miami in 2021.
Security Concerns Amid Afghan Instability
The aviation authorities are investigating security lapses at Kabul airport, exposing vulnerabilities in global air travel, particularly in regions facing instability. The boy’s extraordinary journey serves as a stark reminder of the risks curiosity can provoke.
