Akash Prime Successfully Tested in Ladakh, Boosts India’s Air Defence Capabilities

Indian Army and DRDO Achieve Direct Hits at 15,000 Feet

In a significant boost to India’s indigenous defence capabilities, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Army have successfully tested the Akash Prime surface-to-air missile system in Ladakh at an altitude exceeding 15,000 feet. Conducted over two days, the trial was led by the Army Air Defence Corps and witnessed the Akash Prime accurately intercepting and destroying two fast-moving aerial targets in challenging high-altitude conditions.

Indigenous Technology Shows Precision and Reliability

A defence official stated that the system achieved a 100% strike rate, showcasing its precision and resilience even in the thin air and low temperatures of the Ladakh sector. As an upgraded version of the original Akash missile, Akash Prime features an indigenously developed active Radio Frequency seeker, significantly enhancing its targeting accuracy, particularly under extreme environmental conditions.

Strategic Asset in India’s Border Defence

With an operational range of up to 45 kilometres, the Akash Prime is designed to defend both military installations and civilian assets from aircraft and drone attacks. Its high mobility and adaptability make it an essential part of India’s air defence strategy, especially in volatile regions along the Line of Control (LoC) and the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

Aftermath of Operation Sindoor Adds Context

The successful test follows Operation Sindoor in May 2025, during which Akash Prime reportedly neutralised hostile aerial threats, including Pakistani drones, a Chinese aircraft, and a Turkish-origin Bayraktar TB2 drone. The operation exposed shortcomings in Pakistan’s air defence systems despite external support, and further underscored the operational value of Akash Prime in border security.

Integration into Army Regiments Underway

Following this successful trial, plans are in motion to induct Akash Prime into the Indian Army’s 3rd and 4th Air Defence Regiments. This move reinforces India’s multi-layered air defence grid and adds muscle to national security in sensitive frontier areas.

A Step Forward in Atmanirbhar Bharat Mission

Developed and produced domestically by Bharat Dynamics Limited and Bharat Electronics Limited, the Akash Prime represents a vital component of the Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) initiative. Its indigenous development is also expected to significantly reduce foreign defence procurement costs, saving billions in foreign exchange.

Enhancing Regional Security Amid Growing Tensions

With regional tensions in South Asia still running high, the deployment and operational success of Akash Prime mark a major advancement in India’s capability to secure its airspace. The test reinforces India’s strategic edge in air defence and highlights the increasing effectiveness of its homegrown military technologies.
