Amit Shah Explains NDA’s Choice
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has clarified the rationale behind the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) selecting senior BJP leader C.P. Radhakrishnan as its vice-presidential candidate. Rejecting suggestions that the nomination was aimed at consolidating party dominance, Shah highlighted the principle of regional representation.
“With the Prime Minister representing the West and North, and the President from the East, it is only natural that the Vice President comes from the South,” Shah said.
Radhakrishnan’s Political Journey
C.P. Radhakrishnan is one of the prominent faces of southern BJP politics. He has served as a two-time Member of Parliament, headed the BJP in Tamil Nadu, and held gubernatorial positions in Jharkhand, Telangana, Puducherry, and Maharashtra. Known for his organisational skills and grassroots connect, Radhakrishnan’s nomination reflects the NDA’s effort to strengthen its presence in the South.
RSS Legacy Not a Liability
Shah also addressed Radhakrishnan’s long association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), asserting there was nothing objectionable in it.
“Many of our tallest leaders, from Atal Bihari Vajpayee to L.K. Advani, have had RSS backgrounds. It is a matter of ideological commitment, not stigma,” Shah underlined.
Opposition Counters with Justice Reddy
The opposition bloc has chosen B. Sudarshan Reddy, a former Supreme Court judge, as its candidate. Justice Reddy, known for his integrity and deep understanding of constitutional principles, brings a contrasting profile to the contest. His judicial stature and reputation for sagacity are expected to resonate with sections of the electorate seeking a non-political face.
A Keenly Watched Contest
The election is shaping up as a battle of contrasting personalities—Radhakrishnan, the seasoned political leader with years of governance and organisational experience, versus Justice Reddy, the jurist with a reputation for fairness and constitutional clarity. Political analysts believe this will be one of the most closely followed vice-presidential elections in recent memory.
