ATF Prices Rise in November: Air Travel May Become Costlier for Passengers

ATF prices in Delhi rise to ₹138.50 per litre from November 1, increasing pressure on airlines and raising concerns over a possible hike in flight ticket prices.

Air travellers may face higher ticket prices in the coming days as aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices have increased again from November 1. The latest revision has raised the cost of aviation fuel in Delhi by around 1 per cent, adding to the financial pressure on airlines.

The price of ATF in Delhi has increased from ₹137.12 per litre to ₹138.50 per litre, marking a rise of ₹1.38 per litre. This is the fourth consecutive monthly increase in aviation fuel prices, raising concerns about the potential impact on airline operating costs and airfares.

In October, ATF prices had surged by 13.22 per cent, or approximately ₹16 per litre, putting considerable pressure on the aviation sector.

How Much Has ATF Become Costlier?

With effect from November 1, ATF prices in Delhi have increased to ₹138.50 per litre from the previous rate of ₹137.12 per litre.

Although the latest increase is relatively small compared with the sharp rise recorded in October, the continued upward trend could affect airline budgets. Sustained increases in fuel prices make it more expensive for airlines to operate flights and manage their overall expenses.

The impact may be particularly significant if aviation fuel prices continue to rise in the coming months.

Why Are ATF Prices Important for Airlines?

Aviation turbine fuel is one of the biggest operating expenses for airlines. It accounts for approximately 35 to 40 per cent of an airline’s operating costs.

When ATF prices rise, airlines face higher expenses for operating their aircraft. These additional costs can affect their profitability and force them to consider measures to manage the financial burden.

Airlines may respond by adjusting fares, introducing fuel surcharges or revising their pricing strategies, depending on market conditions and competition.

Will Flight Tickets Become More Expensive?

The latest increase in ATF prices has raised concerns among passengers about a possible rise in airfares.

Airlines may consider increasing fuel surcharges or revising ticket prices to compensate for higher operating costs. However, an increase in aviation fuel prices does not automatically result in an immediate rise in fares across all routes.

Ticket prices depend on several factors, including passenger demand, competition, route profitability and the airline’s pricing policy.

If fuel prices continue to climb, airlines may face greater pressure to increase fares or impose additional fuel-related charges. For passengers, this could mean paying more for air travel in the coming days, although no immediate fare increase across all routes can be assumed.

Travellers planning upcoming trips should monitor ticket prices and airline announcements for any changes in fares or additional charges.
