A Surprise Victory from the Ground
The Tamil Nadu Assembly elections have delivered yet another remarkable story alongside Vijay’s political rise. K. Vijay Dhamu, an auto-rickshaw driver by profession, has stunned observers with a sensational victory in the Royapuram constituency.
Dhamu’s win stands out as one of the biggest upsets of the election, highlighting a powerful grassroots wave in favour of new faces.
Defeats Political Heavyweights
Contesting from Royapuram, Dhamu secured over 55,000 votes and defeated his nearest rival by a margin of more than 14,000 votes.
What makes the victory even more significant is the stature of his opponents:
- D. Jayakumar, a five-time MLA and a heavyweight from the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), finished third.
- Subair Khan of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), and son of late minister Rahman Khan, secured second place.
Breaking a Long-Standing Stronghold
Royapuram had long been considered a stronghold of Jayakumar, who had dominated the seat since 1991. Dhamu’s victory has broken this decades-old political hold, delivering a major setback to AIADMK.
The result signals a shift in voter sentiment, where established political dominance is being challenged by grassroots candidates.
Powered by Fan Club Network
Dhamu’s rise is closely linked to his long association with Vijay’s fan club network, Vijay Makkal Iyakkam. Having worked at the grassroots level for years, he entered the political arena as a “common man” candidate.
During his campaign, Dhamu emphasised his connection with the people, stating that while he may be seen as a new face, his work at the ground level through the fan network spans several years.
Part of a Larger Political Wave
Dhamu’s victory is also being seen as part of the larger electoral wave led by Vijay and his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
From Chennai to other parts of the state, this wave has significantly altered the political landscape, helping newcomers challenge seasoned leaders.
A Symbol of Changing Politics
K. Vijay Dhamu’s victory reflects a broader transformation in Tamil Nadu politics, where voters are increasingly open to alternative leadership and grassroots representation.
As the state witnesses a shift away from traditional political strongholds, Dhamu’s story stands as a powerful example of how grassroots mobilisation and public connect can redefine electoral outcomes.
