Balasore’s Political Heavyweight Bids Adieu to BJD – What’s Next for Jena?

Former Balasore MP Rabindra Kumar Jena steps down from the Biju Janata Dal, triggering speculation of a possible shift in Odisha politics ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections in India.

Former Lok Sabha MP Rabindra Kumar Jena has resigned from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), relinquishing his primary membership of the party in a development that has sent ripples through political circles in Odisha. The move comes at a crucial time when political equations in the state are under intense scrutiny ahead of the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections in India.

Resignation Submitted to Naveen Patnaik

Jena submitted his resignation to BJD president and former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday. In his resignation letter, he cited personal reasons for stepping down but thanked the party leadership and workers for their support over the years.

“I have been a disciplined member of the Biju Janata Dal for many years, strengthening the organization while serving the people of Balasore,” Jena wrote. “However, due to certain personal circumstances, I have taken this difficult decision to step away. This journey will remain memorable, and I extend my deep thanks to state leadership colleagues and party workers in Balasore district for their support, respect and opportunities.”

Political Journey in Balasore

Jena has long been considered a key political figure in northern Odisha, particularly in the Balasore region. He rose to prominence after winning the 2014 general elections from the Balasore Lok Sabha seat, defeating Pratap Chandra Sarangi of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

However, the political tide shifted in the 2019 general elections when Sarangi reclaimed the seat, defeating Jena and strengthening the BJP’s foothold in the district.

Speculation Over Next Political Move

Jena’s sudden resignation has fueled speculation about his next political move. With the BJD’s influence in Balasore perceived to be declining, several political observers believe the former MP could be preparing to join the BJP.

Although Jena has not yet revealed his future plans, the timing of his resignation has added intrigue to Odisha’s political landscape.

Impact on Odisha Politics

The development is being closely watched by political analysts, as it could influence power equations in northern Odisha. With electoral contests approaching and parties looking to consolidate their regional strongholds, Jena’s exit from the BJD may signal shifting loyalties and new alliances in the state’s evolving political scenario.
