Bangladesh is facing a growing energy crisis, prompting the government to impose fresh restrictions on business and public activities to reduce electricity consumption across the country.
In an official notification issued on August 12, the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources directed shopping malls, markets and shops across Bangladesh to remain open only from 11 am to 8 pm.
The new restrictions also apply to fairs, trade fairs and cultural programmes being held or scheduled across the country. Organisers have been instructed to conclude such events by 8 pm. Decorative and other non-essential lighting must also be switched off by 7 pm.
The government has taken the measures amid prolonged power cuts and growing pressure on the country’s electricity and fuel supply. Authorities are seeking to reduce the use of artificial lighting and conserve energy during the ongoing crisis.
Bangladesh Seeks Additional Diesel From India
As the energy situation remains challenging, Bangladesh has also approached India for additional diesel supplies.
Bangladesh Energy Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood held discussions with Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pranay Verma and requested additional diesel supplies from India.
Dhaka is particularly concerned that any further escalation of the conflict in the Middle East could disrupt global fuel supplies and make imports more difficult. Bangladesh has therefore sought additional diesel through the India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline, which connects the two countries’ fuel networks.
India Examining Bangladesh’s Request
India has acknowledged receiving the request from Bangladesh.
Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said Bangladesh had approached India for additional diesel supplies and that the request was currently being examined.
The latest developments highlight the growing pressure on Bangladesh’s energy sector as the country struggles with electricity shortages and concerns over fuel availability. The government’s decision to limit commercial operating hours and reduce non-essential lighting is aimed at conserving available energy while efforts continue to secure additional fuel supplies.
