BCCI Awards Fiasco: Gill Mistakenly Crowned Champions Trophy Captain, Wrong Team Photo Sparks Outrage

Graphic blunders during the BCCI Naman Awards, including a team photo mix-up and captaincy error involving Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma, triggered sharp reactions from cricket fans on social media.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) hosted its prestigious BCCI Naman Awards in the national capital on Sunday, celebrating the achievements of multiple Indian teams that lifted ICC trophies over the past year.

The event aimed to honour five successful squads, including the champions of the ICC Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup 2025 and 2026, the winners of the ICC Champions Trophy, the Women’s ODI World Cup champions, and the Under-19 Men’s World Cup-winning team.

Several prominent figures of Indian cricket, including Shubman Gill, Smriti Mandhana, and legendary coach Rahul Dravid, were honoured for their outstanding contributions to the sport.

Graphic Mix-Up During Under-19 Women’s Segment

Despite the celebratory atmosphere, the ceremony soon became the subject of online criticism due to two noticeable errors.

During the medal presentation for the Under-19 women’s team, the giant screen behind the stage mistakenly displayed an image of the senior Indian women’s team led by Harmanpreet Kaur, who had won the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in November 2025.

The error went unnoticed by organisers during the segment, leaving viewers confused and sparking reactions on social media platforms.

Captaincy Confusion Sparks Online Debate

Another blunder occurred during a panel discussion featuring the victorious captains. In the absence of regular captain Rohit Sharma, vice-captain Shubman Gill represented the Champions Trophy-winning side on stage.

However, the graphic displayed on the screen incorrectly labelled Gill as the captain of the Champions Trophy-winning team. The mistake quickly drew criticism from fans, particularly supporters of Rohit Sharma.

A social media post by the BCCI that repeated the same error was later deleted after widespread backlash online.

Fans Turn Ceremony Into Meme Fest

The ceremony, broadcast on Star Sports, was intended to celebrate Indian cricket’s remarkable achievements. However, the graphic mishaps overshadowed the occasion and soon turned the event into a trending topic online.

Fans flooded social media with memes and sarcastic comments, pointing out that even the governing body of Indian cricket is not immune to organisational errors.

Celebrations Continue Despite Slip-Ups

Despite the embarrassing moments, the Naman Awards ceremony remained a significant occasion highlighting the success of Indian cricket across different levels.

The event celebrated young talents and established stars alike, reinforcing India’s dominance in global cricket over the past year—even as the organisers faced criticism for the avoidable mistakes.
