Bhubaneswar DCP Jagmohan Meena Resigns, Cites Personal Reasons

2013-batch IPS officer cites personal reasons for stepping down; resignation comes amid rising crime concerns and scrutiny over the Balianta mob violence case.

In a significant development within the Commissionerate Police, Jagmohan Meena, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Bhubaneswar, has resigned from his post, citing personal reasons. The resignation of the 2013-batch IPS officer has sparked widespread discussion, with reports suggesting that he may join a private company.

Meena assumed charge as Bhubaneswar DCP on February 28, 2025. Before his posting in the state capital, he served as Superintendent of Police (SP) in Angul and Ganjam districts and also held the position of DCP in the Cuttack Urban Police District.

While the exact reason behind his resignation remains unclear, Meena confirmed that his decision was purely personal. Speaking after stepping down, he said, “I have resigned due to personal reasons. I have been happy throughout my long career in the police service and had the opportunity to serve in many parts of Odisha.”

Meena also stated that the Odisha government has accepted his resignation. Sources indicate that the 37-year-old IPS officer is likely to join a private company owned by one of his close relatives in Rajasthan, although there has been no official confirmation regarding his future plans.

His resignation comes at a time when Bhubaneswar has been witnessing a rise in crime, prompting public concern over law and order in the city. The Commissionerate Police has also faced criticism over its handling of the recent mob violence in Balianta, in which a youth named Soumya lost his life.

The Balianta incident had drawn sharp criticism from Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who had expressed strong dissatisfaction over the handling of the case. Against this backdrop, Meena’s sudden resignation has surprised not only the public but also many within the police department.

With the reasons behind his exit still unclear, Jagmohan Meena’s resignation has become a major talking point in Odisha’s administrative and policing circles, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding his departure despite his public statement attributing it to personal reasons.
