From Heritage Lanes to Modern Roads
Bhubaneswar beautifully blends its rich past with rapid urban development. While the narrow lanes of Old Town still echo history and tradition, areas like Sahid Nagar and Patia showcase the city’s modern face with wide roads, commercial complexes, and urban lifestyle.
Over the decades, the city has evolved significantly—from humble beginnings with cycle rickshaws to now hosting advanced public transport systems, including double-decker buses. The skyline has transformed with high-rise buildings, bustling markets, and expanding business hubs.
Historical Roots of the Capital City
The foundation of Bhubaneswar as Odisha’s capital dates back to September 30, 1946, when a resolution was passed in the Odisha Legislative Assembly to establish the city as the new capital.
Later, on April 13, 1948, India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru laid the foundation stone of the city. At that time, Bhubaneswar was a small settlement with just a few villages, five police stations, and a population of around 15,000.
Rapid Growth into a Metropolitan Hub
Today, Bhubaneswar’s population has crossed one million, reflecting its rapid expansion over nearly eight decades. The city has emerged as a key center for education, healthcare, sports, and governance in eastern India.
Known as the “Temple City,” Bhubaneswar has successfully transitioned into a modern smart city while preserving its cultural identity. It is no longer just a geographical location but an experience shaped by history, growth, and aspirations.
