The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Saturday officially announced its nominees for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, putting an end to intense speculation within Odisha’s political circles. Party president and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik confirmed that senior leader Santrupt Mishra will be the party’s official candidate, while Dr. Datteshwar Hota has been named the common candidate backed by the party.
Leadership Finalises Decision After Key Meetings
The announcement followed two days of hectic political activity at Naveen Niwas, the residence of the Chief Minister. Dr. Hota’s early-morning visit to the CM’s residence on Saturday further fuelled speculation that the leadership was on the verge of finalising its choice.
On Friday, several BJD MLAs were summoned to Naveen Niwas in what was widely perceived as a decisive consultation ahead of the Rajya Sabha polls. Around 30 to 35 legislators reportedly reached the venue. However, only a handful were able to meet the Chief Minister, while others left after a brief wait as the anticipated full-scale discussion did not materialise.
Fresh Meeting Signals Final Call
A fresh meeting was convened on Saturday at 11:30 am, indicating that the party leadership was working to resolve last-minute details before making the formal declaration.
Earlier, MLA Arun Kumar Sahu had hinted that the final decision would rest entirely with the party president following internal deliberations, including discussions linked to the Public Accounts Committee meeting.
BJD Eyes Stronger Presence in Rajya Sabha
With the candidates now officially declared, the BJD has moved swiftly to consolidate its position in the Upper House. The decision is expected to reinforce the party’s influence at the national level as Odisha prepares for another crucial electoral phase.
Political observers believe the timely announcement reflects the party’s strategy to maintain organisational discipline while projecting unity ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections.
