The Biju Janata Dal has strongly criticized BJP MP Nishikant Dubey over his alleged derogatory remarks about Odisha’s iconic leader Biju Patnaik. The party has demanded a public apology and warned of statewide protests if the issue is not addressed.
BJD Leaders Demand Immediate Apology
At a press conference, senior BJD leaders Devi Mishra and Pramila Mallick voiced strong condemnation.
Devi Mishra stated that Biju Patnaik was not just a leader of Odisha but a national figure and freedom fighter respected globally. He termed Dubey’s remarks as reflective of a “twisted mindset” and warned of public backlash if an apology is not issued promptly.
Pramila Mallick described the comments as “mentally distorted” and accused Dubey of seeking attention by targeting a widely respected personality.
Naveen Patnaik Reacts Sharply
BJD chief and former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik also reacted strongly to the controversy. Expressing surprise at Dubey’s remarks, he suggested that the BJP MP’s statements were inappropriate and even hinted that he might require psychiatric evaluation.
BJP Voices Also Condemn Remarks
The controversy saw reactions from within the BJP as well. Rajya Sabha MP Dilip Ray publicly expressed his disapproval, praising Biju Patnaik’s courage, sacrifices, and contributions to India’s freedom struggle as well as Indonesia’s independence movement.
Dubey Issues Clarification
Responding to the backlash, Nishikant Dubey clarified that his remarks were not directed at Biju Patnaik. He emphasized that the BJP holds the late leader in high regard and respects his legacy as a freedom fighter.
BJD Stands Firm, Warns of Statewide Protest
Despite the clarification, BJD leaders remain firm in their demand for a formal apology. They have warned that if Dubey fails to apologize, the party will take the protest to the people across Odisha.
Biju Patnaik continues to be a revered figure in the state, and the issue has the potential to trigger widespread public sentiment if it escalates further.
