Jay Dholakia Wins by Over 80,000 Votes
In western Odisha, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a resounding victory in the Nuapada Assembly by-election. Jay Dholakia — the BJP candidate and elder son of former MLA Rajendra Dholakia — clinched the seat with an unprecedented lead of more than 80,000 votes, marking one of the most decisive wins in the region’s electoral history. The result reinforces the BJP’s rapidly growing influence in western Odisha.
Opposition Fails to Make Impact
Despite efforts from all major political parties, the by-poll concluded with a clear mandate in favour of the BJP. The ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD), once dominant in the region, appeared to be losing its long-time stronghold without mounting a significant challenge. Meanwhile, the Congress remained largely absent throughout the campaign, failing to connect with the electorate.
Local BJP leaders, including Rajya Sabha MP Sujit Kumar, said the victory was expected as the party was well-prepared organisationally and carried out extensive voter outreach.
Massive Show of Strength During Nomination Day
October 16 witnessed a major show of political strength during the nomination filing of Jay Dholakia. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, accompanied by several ministers, attended the event to extend support. The day also saw a notable political shift, with over 2,000 workers from the BJD and Congress reportedly joining the BJP, further boosting the party’s momentum.
Boost for BJP Ahead of 2029 Elections
Political analysts believe that this emphatic win is likely to strengthen the BJP as it gears up for the 2029 Assembly elections. At the same time, the verdict poses a significant challenge for the BJD, which now faces increasing pressure to retain its influence in western Odisha.
The size of the victory highlights shifting political dynamics in the state, with more tribal and rural voters rallying behind the BJP, signalling broader transformations in Odisha’s electoral landscape.
