Centre Plans One Password for Public Wi-Fi Across India

TRAI Proposes Single Login Public Wi-Fi Network With Enhanced Security and Free Basic Internet Access Across India

New Nationwide Public Wi-Fi System in the Works

The Central Government is preparing to introduce an advanced public Wi-Fi system that could transform internet access across India. Under the proposed system, users will be able to access public Wi-Fi hotspots nationwide using a single password or one-time login authentication.

The move aims to simplify internet access by eliminating the need for separate OTP verification every time users connect to a new hotspot. More than 400,000 public Wi-Fi hotspots across the country are expected to be integrated into the system.

TRAI Seeks Public Feedback on Draft Proposal

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has prepared a draft proposal regarding the new framework and has invited public feedback.

According to the proposal, the government plans to implement “Wi-Fi Protected Access 3” (WPA3) security standards to ensure safer and more secure internet access on public networks. The enhanced security is expected to provide better protection for users, especially while making digital payments in crowded areas such as railway stations, marketplaces, and transport hubs.

Free Basic Internet, Paid High-Speed Access

Under the proposed model, basic internet services will remain free for users. However, those seeking high-speed internet access may need to purchase low-cost recharge plans.

Officials believe the system will reduce pressure on mobile networks in crowded locations where connectivity issues often disrupt online services and digital payments. Public Wi-Fi networks are expected to handle heavy internet traffic more efficiently while also delivering improved browsing speeds.

Advertisement-Based Revenue Model Proposed

The new policy also focuses on making the service financially sustainable for operators. Authorities are considering an advertisement-based revenue model that would allow operators to earn income while offering free public Wi-Fi services.

In addition, the government is also examining the possibility of introducing viability gap funding to support expansion and infrastructure development.

Separate Models for Urban and Rural Areas

The proposal outlines different implementation strategies for cities and rural regions. Urban areas are expected to receive high-speed internet-enabled Wi-Fi infrastructure, while rural regions may adopt a community Wi-Fi model to improve connectivity in underserved areas.

The initiative is aimed at expanding affordable internet access and strengthening India’s digital infrastructure.

India Lags Behind in Public Wi-Fi Usage

Despite being one of the world’s largest internet markets, India remains far behind several countries in public Wi-Fi usage.

According to available estimates:

  • South Korea has nearly 80% public Wi-Fi usage
  • The United States stands at around 70%
  • Europe and China both report nearly 60%
  • The United Kingdom records about 50%

In comparison, only around 2% of people in India currently use public Wi-Fi services.

Experts believe the new TRAI proposal could significantly improve internet accessibility while reducing dependence on mobile data networks.

Former BSNL Chairman Welcomes Proposal

Former BSNL Chairman Arun Srivastava said the initiative would not only improve connectivity quality but also strengthen India’s digital ecosystem by providing affordable internet access.

He added that the proposal would be especially beneficial for people who cannot afford expensive mobile data plans, helping bridge the digital divide across the country.
