Congress MLAs Flee to Bengaluru Resort: BJP Accused of Luring Amid Rajya Sabha Poll Fears

Congress relocates eight MLAs to Bengaluru resort amid fears of cross-voting ahead of Odisha Rajya Sabha elections, as BJD and BJP tighten party control.

In a high-stakes political maneuver ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections in Odisha, the Congress party has shifted eight of its MLAs to a resort in Bengaluru to prevent any potential cross-voting and maintain party discipline.

Precautionary Move to Ensure Party Unity

The Congress leadership cited security and strategic concerns behind the relocation of lawmakers to a private resort in Ramanagara near Bengaluru. Party insiders revealed that the move was also intended to facilitate meetings with senior national leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge.

Congress Legislative Party leader Ramchandra Kadam confirmed the step, stating, “They have gone to Bengaluru to meet senior party leaders. While there is no immediate threat, vigilance is being maintained to ensure unity.”

Allegations of BJP Horse-Trading

Kadam accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attempting to entice Congress MLAs with money, a tactic commonly referred to as horse-trading in Indian politics. He reassured the public that the relocated MLAs are safe and would not cross-vote, saying, “The MLAs who are here will not engage in cross-voting.”

BJD Tightens Grip on Its Legislators

Meanwhile, the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) is taking preventive measures to secure its majority. Party president and former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik personally wrote to all BJD MLAs, emphasizing strict adherence to party directives. A whip has also been issued warning against any deviation that could jeopardize the party’s Rajya Sabha candidates.

Strategic Importance of Resort Moves

Resorting to relocating MLAs is a common strategy in Indian politics during critical votes. By keeping lawmakers isolated from external influences, parties aim to ensure that the official line is followed. In this case, Congress MLAs are expected to return to Odisha just one day before the Rajya Sabha polling, minimizing risks of last-minute defection.

Political Implications

The BJP has not responded officially to the allegations of horse-trading. As Odisha approaches the Rajya Sabha elections, these developments underscore the fragile nature of political alliances and the intense behind-the-scenes strategies parties employ to maintain control over their legislators.
