A massive avalanche struck the Zojila Pass on the Srinagar–Leh highway in Ladakh, burying several vehicles under snow and causing a major disruption on the vital route. The incident has left multiple vehicles trapped, blocking the highway and triggering panic among travellers.

7 Dead, Several Injured and One Missing

According to officials, at least seven people have lost their lives in the tragedy, while five others sustained injuries. One person is reported missing, and authorities fear the death toll may rise as several vehicles are believed to be completely buried under snow.

Among the deceased are a woman and a child, adding to the gravity of the incident.

Avalanche Hits Near ‘Zero Point’ in Drass Region

Police confirmed that the avalanche occurred in the Drass sub-division near ‘Zero Point’ at Zojila Pass, when a passenger vehicle travelling on the highway was struck by the sudden snow slide. The violent impact trapped multiple vehicles under heavy snow.

Massive Rescue Operations Underway

A large-scale rescue operation has been launched involving the police, Indian Army, Border Roads Organisation (BRO), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local administration teams from Sonamarg and Drass.

Personnel and heavy machinery are working to clear the snow and locate any survivors still trapped beneath the avalanche debris.

Authorities Warn of Possible Rise in Casualties

Officials have cautioned that the death toll could increase as some vehicles remain fully buried under snow. Search and rescue operations are continuing on a war footing to ensure that no one remains trapped.

Condolences and Government Response

Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and extended condolences to the bereaved families. He assured that all possible assistance is being provided to the injured.
