A debate over a possible restriction on social media use among children in Odisha has surfaced in the State Assembly, following concerns about rising digital addiction among young users. The issue was raised during the discussion on the 2025–26 Economic Survey, which revealed that nearly two-thirds of children in the state are becoming victims of digital addiction.
Issue Raised in Odisha Assembly
BJD MLA Subasini Jena raised the issue in the Assembly, expressing concern about the growing impact of social media and excessive screen time on children. She urged the government to consider introducing regulations similar to those adopted by other states like Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh to protect children from the harmful effects of social media.
Jena highlighted that digital addiction among children is becoming a serious problem and called for immediate measures to safeguard their mental health and academic development.
Government Acknowledges the Concern
Responding to the concern, School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond acknowledged the seriousness of the issue. He informed the Assembly that the government is aware of the growing problem and will take necessary steps in the coming days to address it.
The minister assured that the government would examine possible solutions to control excessive digital exposure among children.
Karnataka Introduces Social Media Restrictions
Recently, the government of Karnataka announced a significant decision regarding social media use among minors. The state government has imposed restrictions on social media use for children below the age of 16.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stated during the state’s budget session that stricter rules are necessary to protect children’s mental health, learning ability, and overall well-being.
According to the government, uncontrolled screen time and social media usage can negatively affect children’s behaviour, attention span, and safety. The move aims to keep children under 16 away from harmful and inappropriate digital influences.
Andhra Pradesh Considering Similar Move
Meanwhile, the government of Andhra Pradesh is also preparing to take major steps to regulate social media usage among children due to concerns about online addiction and misuse.
State minister Nara Lokesh said that trust in social media platforms is declining and many children are getting trapped in excessive digital usage.
He added that the government is exploring legal options and has invited major technology companies such as Meta Platforms, Google, X, and ShareChat for discussions. The aim is to study best practices and develop an effective regulatory model.

With rising concerns about online addiction, cyber risks, and mental health issues among children, several states are now exploring ways to regulate social media usage among minors. The debate in Odisha reflects a broader national conversation on balancing digital access with the safety and well-being of young users.
