Delhi’s Unseen Wounds: Blast Survivors Battle PTSD and Guilt in the Mind’s Warzone

Mental health experts warn of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and survivor trauma following the Red Fort explosion in Delhi.

Explosion Leaves Physical and Psychological Scars

The explosion near the world-famous Red Fort has left Delhi shaken. While the broken windows and casualties are the visible consequences, mental health experts warn that survivors and eyewitnesses may suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and long-lasting trauma.

Understanding PTSD and Survivor Trauma

According to Dr A.K. Kumar, Head of Psychiatry at MMG District Hospital, Ghaziabad, PTSD manifests as recurring flashbacks, nightmares, and intense fear, often triggered by seemingly minor cues such as sounds or scents. Survivors frequently experience guilt, asking themselves, “Why me, when others died?”

Other symptoms include irritability, social withdrawal, sleep disturbances, and an increased risk of depression and anxiety if left untreated.

Experts Advise Early Intervention

Dr Kumar emphasizes that early measures are crucial to prevent long-term psychological damage. Recommendations include:

  • Taking short breaks from continuous news exposure

  • Talking to a trusted friend or family member

  • Practicing meditation or deep breathing exercises

  • Seeking professional therapy promptly

He stresses, “Early and timely therapy restores the strength that has been lost.”

Breaking the Stigma Around Trauma

Mental health experts urge the public to recognize that acknowledging trauma is not a sign of weakness. Understanding and addressing the psychological impact is the first step toward recovery.

Families and individuals are encouraged to stay vigilant for symptoms in themselves and loved ones, and seek help without hesitation to navigate the aftermath of this communal trauma.
