Diwali 2026: Odisha Government Warns Against Overpricing of Firecrackers

Odisha Government to Inspect Firecracker Markets Over Price Hikes; Only Licensed Traders Allowed to Sell, While Firecrackers Can Be Burst Between 7 PM and 9 PM on Diwali.

With the festival of lights, Diwali, approaching, the Odisha government has decided to keep a close watch on firecracker prices to prevent traders from overcharging customers. Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister Krushna Chandra Patra has warned that strict action will be taken if firecrackers are sold at prices higher than the prescribed rates.

The Minister said that only traders who obtain licences from the government will be permitted to sell firecrackers during the festive season. Any complaints regarding excessive pricing will be taken seriously, and the concerned shops will be inspected.

Every year, firecracker markets witness a huge rush ahead of Diwali, as people purchase different varieties of crackers to celebrate the festival. However, some traders allegedly take advantage of the increased demand to sell firecrackers at inflated prices.

To prevent such practices, the government will monitor the market and conduct inspections wherever complaints of overpricing are received. The Minister said that collecting extra money from customers will not be tolerated and that protecting consumer interests remains a priority.

Firecracker Use Restricted to Two Hours on Diwali

Meanwhile, the Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB) has issued guidelines to ensure an environment-friendly Diwali celebration this year.

According to the restrictions, people will be allowed to burst firecrackers for only two hours, from 7 PM to 9 PM on Diwali.

The sound level of firecrackers must not exceed the maximum permissible limit of 125 decibels. The board has also prohibited bursting firecrackers near hospitals, educational institutions, courts, religious places, parks and gardens.

The restrictions aim to minimise noise pollution and protect vulnerable sections of society while ensuring that people celebrate the festival safely and responsibly.

With the government keeping a close watch on prices and the Pollution Control Board enforcing time and noise restrictions, authorities have urged people to celebrate Diwali responsibly and follow the prescribed guidelines.
