The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced a series of measures concerning the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, including a special drive to enrol voters whose names were left out of the rolls.
At a Commission meeting held on September 26, the ECI said SIR has already been completed in 20 States and Union Territories, including Bihar and West Bengal. People whose names were left out during or after the revision, including young and first-time voters, can apply to the concerned Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) for inclusion through continuous updation. CEOs, DEOs and EROs have been directed to launch a special enrolment drive.
The Commission also decided that Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will visit the homes of people who receive SIR notices over unmapped records or logical discrepancies to collect documents and upload them on the ECINet system. Physical hearings will generally not be required, except in exceptional cases, with online hearings preferred.
The ECI announced that a committee headed by a Senior Deputy Election Commissioner and including an independent IIT/IIIT expert will review ECINet for compliance with electoral laws and rules.
For Delhi, the deadline for filing claims and objections has been extended to October 30, 2026, while disposal will continue until November 30. In Maharashtra, the corresponding deadlines are October 12 and November 10.
The Commission also reiterated that its SIR-related decisions were taken with the approval of the full Commission.
