Egg Prices Soar Across Odisha, Consumers Feel the Pinch as Rates Touch ₹9 Per Piece

Heatwave, lower production and rising demand push egg prices higher; government says rates will ease as supply improves

Consumers across Odisha are facing another spell of rising food prices, with egg prices witnessing a sharp increase across the state. Considered one of the most affordable sources of protein for low and middle-income families, eggs are gradually becoming costlier, putting additional pressure on household budgets.

In several parts of the state, the retail price of an egg has increased to ₹8-₹9 per piece, triggering concern among consumers. Traders say they are purchasing eggs from wholesalers at higher prices and have no option but to pass on the increased cost to customers.

In Kendrapara, the retail price has reached ₹9 per egg, while a tray of 30 eggs is selling for ₹245 and a crate for around ₹1,220. The sudden rise has also affected buying patterns, with many consumers reducing their purchases. Customers who earlier bought eggs three or four times a week are now purchasing them only once, resulting in slower business for retailers.

A similar trend has been reported from Balasore, where the price has risen from ₹7 to ₹8 per egg in recent weeks.

According to poultry traders, the prolonged heatwave earlier this year led to large-scale poultry deaths, significantly reducing egg production. At the same time, demand has increased due to the reopening of schools and Anganwadi centres, where eggs are distributed under nutrition programmes. Traders also point to increased exports as another factor contributing to the shortage.

Responding to the price rise, Odisha Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Minister Gokulananda Mallik said the government is aware of the situation.

“The severe summer heat caused poultry losses, while rising exports and increased demand after schools and Anganwadi centres reopened have pushed up egg consumption. As production gradually improves, prices are expected to come down,” the minister said.

With demand continuing to outpace supply, egg prices remain elevated across Odisha. Consumers now hope the government’s assurance of increased production will soon translate into relief from the rising cost of this essential food item.
