A shocking incident in Odisha’s Keonjhar district has sparked nationwide outrage after a tribal man carried his deceased sister’s skeletal remains to a bank to withdraw money from her account. Denied repeatedly due to lack of documentation, his desperate act exposed deep flaws in the system, administrative apathy, and a disturbing lack of empathy from both officials and bystanders.

A Crisis of Humanity in Broad Daylight
In a deeply disturbing incident from Odisha’s Keonjhar district, humanity itself seems to have failed. What unfolded was not just an administrative lapse, but a heartbreaking reflection of societal apathy. A man, driven by helplessness, was forced to carry the skeletal remains of his deceased sister to a bank—an act that has sparked outrage across the state, the country, and beyond.

The Ordeal of Jitu Munda
Jitu Munda, a poor tribal resident, found himself trapped in a cruel web of bureaucratic rigidity and indifference. His sister had passed away months ago, but due to delays in obtaining her death certificate, he was unable to withdraw money from her bank account. Despite repeated visits and pleas at the bank, officials allegedly refused to release the funds, insisting that the account holder must be physically present.

Left with no other option, Jitu took an unimaginable step. He exhumed his sister’s skeletal remains, tied them in a sack, and walked nearly 3 kilometers under the scorching sun to the bank. Placing the remains at the entrance, he pleaded once again—this time trying to prove that his sister was indeed dead.

Silent Spectators: Society’s Failure
Perhaps even more disturbing than the act itself was the response of society. Passersby reportedly chose to record videos on their mobile phones rather than offering help or even basic empathy. Not a single person stepped forward to assist or console the grieving man. The incident exposes a chilling reality—where humanity is overshadowed by apathy and digital voyeurism.

Administrative Apathy and Systemic Failure
The situation highlights glaring loopholes in governance and public service delivery. The delay in issuing a death certificate, lack of awareness among marginalized communities, and rigid banking procedures all contributed to this tragedy. Even after reaching the bank with the remains, Jitu reportedly faced insensitive behavior.

Local police, instead of offering assistance, allegedly reprimanded him and failed to arrange transport for the remains. Forced to carry the skeleton back home, Jitu’s ordeal did not end there—it only deepened the questions surrounding administrative accountability.

Political Silence Raises Questions
What has further intensified public anger is the lack of immediate response from the authorities. The incident took place in the home district of the Chief Minister, yet there was no prompt reaction for over 24 hours. This silence has raised serious concerns about governance priorities and the gap between political narratives of development and ground realities.

Bank’s Clarification vs Reality
Following public outrage and viral social media coverage, the bank authorities issued a clarification stating that Jitu had only visited once. However, CCTV footage reportedly contradicts this claim, showing that he had approached bank officials multiple times within a short span, pleading for help. This discrepancy has further fueled suspicion and criticism.

A Wake-Up Call for Society and Governance
This incident is not just about one man’s suffering—it is a mirror reflecting systemic failures and societal indifference. While governments spend crores on advertisements and public outreach, the most vulnerable sections remain unaware of basic procedures and rights.

The tragedy of Jitu Munda raises uncomfortable but necessary questions:
Where did our humanity go?
Why did no one intervene?
Who is accountable for pushing a man to such desperation? As the story continues to spark debate, it stands as a grim reminder that development is meaningless without compassion, accessibility, and accountability. The incident demands not just investigation, but introspection—from authorities and society alike.

Early Morning Tremor Triggers Panic Among Residents
Balangir witnessed mild earthquake tremors early Saturday morning at around 4:40 AM, causing brief panic among locals. Many residents reportedly rushed out of their homes as the ground shook. However, no casualties or property damage have been reported so far.

No Immediate Reports of Loss or Damage
According to initial reports, the tremors were mild in intensity and did not result in any significant impact. Authorities have confirmed that the situation remains under control, though a sense of fear briefly gripped the area.

Recent Seismic Activity Raises Concern
This is not the first instance of such activity in the region. Just days earlier, tremors were felt in Kalahandi district as well. On April 29, a mild earthquake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale was recorded at 7:42 PM. The following day, April 30, another tremor of magnitude 2.7 struck at 7:20 PM, surprising residents due to the back-to-back occurrences.

Epicentre and Geological Details
As per reports from the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the epicentre of the recent seismic activity was located at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers beneath the Earth’s surface. The coordinates were recorded at latitude 19.635 and longitude 82.705.

In the earlier April 29 incident, the earthquake’s epicentre was also located in Kalahandi district at a depth of around 24 kilometers.

The Earth’s crust is divided into several plates that are constantly in motion. When these plates collide or shift at fault zones, stress builds up over time. Once the pressure exceeds a certain limit, the energy is released in the form of seismic waves, resulting in an earthquake.

Authorities Monitoring the Situation
Although the tremors have not caused any damage, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. Residents are advised to remain calm but alert in case of further seismic activity.

The initiative aims to strengthen rural connectivity and accelerate economic growth in remote regions of the state.

The programme was formally inaugurated in Rayagada in the presence of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Union Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

₹1,700 Crore Investment for Rural Roads

Under PMGSY-IV, over ₹1,700 crore has been approved for Odisha. The project will construct 1,702 km of all-weather roads covering 898 villages across eight districts, including Rayagada, Koraput, Kandhamal, Keonjhar, Khordha, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, and Sambalpur.

A total of 827 new road projects will be implemented under a 60:40 funding pattern between the Centre and the State, ensuring improved last-mile connectivity for tribal and remote regions.
