All five orangutans housed at the Nandankanan Zoological Park are currently healthy and responding well to treatment and care, according to zoo authorities. The orangutans are consuming food properly and gradually adapting to Odisha’s climate.
In view of their improving health and adjustment to the local environment, the authorities are planning to shift the five orangutans from their existing glass enclosure to an open enclosure. The move is aimed at helping the animals gradually acclimatise to their surroundings in a more natural environment.
However, the decision will be taken only after the technical committee constituted for the care and monitoring of the orangutans gives its approval. Even after being shifted to the enclosure, the animals will continue to remain under quarantine as a precautionary measure.
Restrictions will also remain in place for visitors around the enclosure to ensure that the orangutans are not exposed to unnecessary disturbance or health risks.
Zoo officials are keeping a close watch on all five animals and monitoring their health, food intake and movement. Authorities said their overall health condition remains stable.
Meanwhile, one of the orangutans that had developed a fever has now recovered. Health monitoring has also shown improvement in the condition of four orangutans, with their stool samples indicating a reduction in worm infestation.
The movement and activity levels of the five young orangutans have also improved compared to earlier. The authorities are continuing to closely monitor their recovery and adaptation before taking the next step in their rehabilitation.
The five orangutans had recently been brought to Odisha and shifted to Nandankanan following their rescue. Their health and acclimatisation have since remained under close observation by zoo officials and the technical team.
