Fuel Crisis Looms in Odisha’s Jharigaon as Petrol Pumps Run Dry

Only One Petrol Pump Functional in Jharigaon as Diesel Shortage Threatens Farming Activities in Nabarangpur District

Shortage of Petrol and Diesel Creates Trouble for Residents and Farmers

A fuel crisis situation has emerged in Jharigaon block of Odisha’s Nabarangpur district as most petrol pumps in the area have either shut down or are running low on petrol and diesel supplies.

Out of the three petrol pumps operating in Jharigaon block headquarters, only one pump remains functional at present. However, even that outlet is reportedly facing severe shortage of fuel, raising concerns among vehicle owners and local residents.

Two Petrol Pumps Remain Closed

According to local sources, the Mathia petrol pump has remained closed for nearly two months. Similarly, Jai Hanuman petrol pump has reportedly been shut for the last five days due to non-availability of fuel.

At present, residents are solely dependent on the Biridi Chand petrol pump, where fuel stocks are also said to be insufficient to meet growing demand.

The sudden scarcity of petrol and diesel has created major inconvenience for commuters, especially two-wheeler riders who rely on daily fuel availability for transportation.

Farmers Fear Impact on Agricultural Activities

The fuel shortage has also become a matter of concern for farmers in the region. Following recent Kalbaisakhi rains, farmers in Jharigaon block have started agricultural activities in their fields.

However, lack of diesel supply may severely affect farming operations, particularly for those dependent on tractors and agricultural machinery.

Local farmers said timely farming activities are crucial during this period, and continued shortage of diesel could disrupt cultivation work.

Petrol Pump Owner Blames Supply Delay

Biridi Chand petrol pump owner Anil Jain stated that the crisis has occurred due to delay in fuel supply from the company despite payment being made in advance.

He informed that fresh stock of petrol and diesel is expected to arrive by tomorrow, which may temporarily ease the situation.

Farmers’ Association Raises Concern

Jharigaon Block Farmers’ Association president Ashok Murti expressed serious concern over the fuel shortage.

He said farmers in the area have recently started cultivation work with new hopes after receiving access to tractors at affordable rates through administrative support. As many farmers have shifted from traditional bullock-based farming to tractors, diesel has become essential for cultivation.

According to him, each tractor is currently receiving fuel worth only around ₹1,000 from petrol pumps, which is insufficient for regular agricultural work.

Fear of Migration if Crisis Continues

Farmers warned that if agricultural work is not completed on time due to diesel shortage, cultivation may suffer badly this season.

They also expressed fear that prolonged fuel scarcity could force many farmers and labourers to migrate outside the state in search of work.

Locals have demanded immediate intervention from the administration to ensure adequate supply of petrol and diesel at all petrol pumps in Jharigaon block to avoid further hardship for residents and farmers.
