The aftermath of the Rajya Sabha elections in Odisha has spiralled into a bitter political confrontation, with the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Indian National Congress trading sharp accusations of horse-trading, cross-voting, and betrayal. What was expected to be a coordinated electoral effort has instead exposed deep fractures within the opposition ranks.
BJP Rejects Cross-Voting Allegations
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) strongly dismissed allegations of horse-trading. Party co-incharge Lata Usendi asserted that no cross-voting took place.
She maintained that legislators exercised their “own judgement” while voting and accused the defeated alliance of making baseless claims out of frustration. Highlighting BJP’s performance, she said the election of three party-backed candidates reflects the party’s growing popularity in Odisha.
BJD Leaders Cry Betrayal
Senior BJD leader Pramila Mallick launched a strong attack, accusing certain MLAs of betrayal. She narrated a personal instance involving Subhashini Jena, alleging that despite assurances of support, votes were cast against the party line.
Mallick used strong words, comparing the incident to betrayal seen in mythology and warning that such acts never end well. She blamed greed for power and money as the driving force behind the cross-voting.
“Black Day for Odisha,” Says BJD MLA
BJD MLA Byomakesh Ray described the election day as a “black day” for Odisha. He alleged that some legislators were influenced by large sums of money and later attempted to shield themselves by invoking the legacy of Biju Patnaik.
Ray further claimed that public protests have already begun in certain constituencies against the accused MLAs and called on party supporters to oppose them.
Serious Allegations Against Leadership
In a startling claim, Ray alleged that even top-level leadership was involved in influencing MLAs through financial inducements. He also took a swipe at Devi Ranjan Tripathy, linking the current controversy to past instances of cross-voting involving his family.
The remarks have intensified the political storm, bringing internal party dynamics and leadership credibility into question.
Naveen Patnaik’s Leadership Under Spotlight
Despite the turmoil, Ray acknowledged that Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik attempted to manage the situation. However, he expressed anguish over the alleged betrayal, stating that such actions would not go unpunished.
Political Fallout and Uncertain Future
The sharp exchanges between leaders have deepened the political crisis in Odisha. The collapse of coordination between BJD and Congress during the elections has raised serious questions about the future of opposition alliances in the state.
Political observers believe the episode could have long-term implications on voter trust and party strategies, as Odisha grapples with the fallout of one of its most dramatic Rajya Sabha elections in recent times.
