Big Tax Relief: From Soap to Tractors, Prices Drop Under New GST Regime

GST 2.0 rolls out with simplified slabs, tax-free essentials, and lower rates on daily-use items, promising relief for households and curbing inflation

Simplified Tax Structure

The rollout of GST 2.0 across India marks a major overhaul in the country’s taxation system. The government has eliminated the 12% and 28% slabs, leaving primarily 5% and 18% rates to cover 99% of daily-use goods. This simplified structure is expected to bring substantial savings for consumers, easing pressure on household budgets.

Zero GST on Essentials

A big win for households comes from the addition of new items to the GST-free list. Life and health insurance, fresh paneer, chhena, bread, pizza bases, and powdered milk are now exempt from tax. Similarly, everyday educational tools like maps, charts, globes, pencils, notebooks, and erasers have also been freed from GST, making basic food and education more affordable.

Cheaper Household and Personal Care Goods

Several pantry and personal care products have moved from the 12% bracket to 5%, making them significantly more affordable. Key items include:

  • Personal care: hair oil, soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, and toothpaste

  • Food staples: namkeen, bhujia, sauces, pasta, chocolates, ghee, and spices

  • Appliances: air conditioners, refrigerators, dishwashers, and LED TVs

Support for Farmers and Healthcare

The reforms also provide relief in the farming and healthcare sectors. Reduced GST applies to:

  • Agriculture: tractors and spare parts, bio-fertilisers, and machinery

  • Healthcare: thermometers, oxygen cylinders, diagnostic kits, glucometers, and life-saving drugs

Other newly added affordable items include sewing machines, sanitary napkins, clinical nappies, and baby feeding bottles.

Expert Reactions

Economists and industry experts have described GST 2.0 as “pro-consumer”, with the potential to boost consumption and curb inflation. A shopper in Delhi expressed the sentiment simply:

“Finally, my grocery bill won’t sting as much!”

A Wallet-Friendly Reform

With these sweeping changes, GST 2.0 is being seen as a major consumer-friendly reform, sending out strong signals of relief amid rising inflation. For millions of Indian households, this tax reform is expected to make daily living lighter on the wallet and easier on the mind.
