The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for several districts in Odisha, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours. The alert comes amid active Kalbaisakhi conditions and the formation of a cyclonic circulation over coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining Yanam.
Orange Alert for 6 Districts
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in six districts—Bargarh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious as intense showers may lead to waterlogging and localized disruptions.
Yellow Warning in 13 Districts
The IMD has also issued a Yellow Warning for 13 districts, forecasting moderate to heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms. Lightning activity and gusty winds are likely to accompany the rain in these regions.
Strong Winds and Thunderstorm Forecast
Wind speeds of 50–60 km/h along with lightning strikes and thunderstorms are expected in parts of the state. In some districts, hailstorms may also occur, increasing the risk of damage to crops and property.
Cyclonic Circulation Behind Weather Activity
A cyclonic circulation has formed over coastal Andhra Pradesh and nearby Yanam, significantly influencing weather patterns in Odisha. Due to this system, rainfall activity is likely to continue across the state for the next seven days, with intense spells expected till March 26.
Additional Alerts for Southern Odisha
For the next 24 hours, Nuapada, Balangir, Kandhamal, and Ganjam districts are under Orange Alert for thunderstorms, lightning, hailstorms, and gusty winds reaching up to 60 km/h.
Meanwhile, districts like Gajapati, Kalahandi, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, and Malkangiri are under Yellow Alert, with wind speeds of 30–40 km/h and light to moderate rainfall expected.
Advisory Issued to Public
The regional weather office in Bhubaneswar has advised people to stay indoors during thunderstorms, avoid open areas, and take precautions against lightning and strong winds.
Recent Rainfall and Temperature Update
Over the past 24 hours, rainfall has been recorded at 13 locations across the state. The highest rainfall of 57.4 mm was recorded in Borigumma in Koraput district.
The ongoing cloudy weather and rainfall have brought temporary relief from heat, with temperatures slightly dropping. However, the IMD has predicted a rise in temperature by 2–3°C after the next few days.
Mahisapat recorded the highest temperature at 36.6°C.
Relief from Heat, But Caution Needed
While the rain has provided respite from the scorching heat, authorities warn that the combination of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds could pose risks. Citizens are advised to stay updated with official weather bulletins and follow safety guidelines.
