Heavy monsoon rainfall lashed Delhi and several parts of North India on Monday, disrupting normal life and causing widespread waterlogging and traffic congestion across the National Capital Region.
Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad witnessed heavy showers accompanied by strong winds. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more rainfall in Delhi-NCR and several other states, including Uttarakhand, Odisha and Telangana.
The IMD issued an Orange Alert for Gurugram and Faridabad, warning of heavy rainfall and advising residents to remain cautious. In Gurugram, nearly two feet of water accumulated along the service lane of Sohna Road near Islampur village. The waterlogging disrupted traffic and resulted in a traffic jam stretching nearly four kilometres.
Several areas of Ghaziabad also faced waterlogging following the heavy downpour. Meanwhile, rainfall in the India Gate area provided relief from the prevailing heat.
Flight Operations Hit
Adverse weather conditions also disrupted flight operations at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport.
According to sources, 385 flights were affected or delayed, with each flight delayed by an average of around 32 minutes. As many as 26 flights were cancelled, while 15 flights were diverted, including three international flights.
Of the diverted flights, 12 were sent to Jaipur, two to Chandigarh and one to Lucknow.
The heavy rain also triggered traffic disruptions at several locations across Delhi-NCR, adding to commuters’ difficulties.
The IMD has advised residents in affected areas to remain alert as further heavy rainfall is expected in parts of North India and other states.
