The Odisha State Meteorological Department has issued warnings of widespread rainfall across the state starting tomorrow, March 15, and continuing until March 19. While most regions are expected to receive rain, certain areas may also experience thunderstorms, with isolated hailstorms possible in a few locations.
Rainfall Likely in Most Parts of the State
According to the regional meteorological office, disruptions in upper atmospheric wind patterns and the influence of the tropical low-pressure system (trough line) are expected to trigger rainfall across Odisha. Officials have issued a yellow warning for affected areas, advising residents to stay alert.
“Some places may experience lightning along with rain, and gusty winds are expected at 40–50 km/h,” said Manorama Mahanti, director of the regional meteorological department.
Odisha Records First 40°C-Plus Temperatures of the Season
Meanwhile, the state is experiencing a severe heatwave. Jharsuguda and Sambalpur were the hottest cities in the past 24 hours, recording temperatures of 40.6°C and 39.9°C respectively. Hirakud recorded 40.2°C, Rourkela 38.8°C, Bhubaneswar 34.2°C, and Cuttack 35.6°C.
The current season marks the first time temperatures above 40°C have been recorded in the state. Other cities such as Sundargarh, Mayurbhanj, and Kendujhar also recorded high temperatures nearing 39–40°C.
Heatwave Alerts in Western Odisha
The meteorological department has issued a heatwave alert for Jharsuguda and Sambalpur districts. Residents are advised to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and stay hydrated.
“The next 24 hours may see temperatures rise by another 2–3°C in several areas,” officials warned, emphasizing that western Odisha and the coastal regions could experience extreme heat along with strong winds.
Localized Rain Eases Temperature in Some Districts
Due to light rain in parts of Mayurbhanj, Kendujhar, and Bhadrak, temperatures in these areas were slightly lower. However, most of the state continues to face dry and hot conditions, signaling the onset of intense summer.
Advisory for Residents
Authorities have urged residents to take precautions during the heatwave and prepare for localized rainfall and thunderstorms. Farmers, in particular, are advised to safeguard crops against sudden weather changes, including hail in some areas.
