The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Tuesday welcomed back its acting chairman Tarique Rahman, who returned to Dhaka after 17 years in self-imposed exile, marking a historic moment in the country’s political landscape. Thousands of party supporters gathered in the capital for a grand rally celebrating Rahman’s homecoming.
Rahman, the elder son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, had been living abroad since 2008 amid multiple legal cases that the BNP has long described as politically motivated.
End of Long Political Exile
Tarique Rahman left Bangladesh during a period of political upheaval and military-backed caretaker rule, later seeking refuge in Europe, primarily the United Kingdom. Over the years, he remained active in BNP politics from abroad, serving as the party’s Senior Vice Chairman and later Acting Chairman.
Recent legal and political developments have led to the withdrawal or suspension of cases against him, clearing the way for his return. BNP leaders termed his homecoming as the “restoration of democratic leadership” in the party.
Massive Public Turnout at Dhaka Rally
BNP organised a massive rally in Dhaka to mark Rahman’s return, with party leaders and supporters calling it a turning point for opposition politics in Bangladesh. Senior BNP figures said Rahman’s presence on the ground would strengthen the party’s organisational capacity ahead of the upcoming elections.
“This is not just a return of a leader, but a return of hope for democracy,” a senior BNP leader said at the rally.
Support for Interim Government and Public Welfare
Following his return, Rahman pledged cooperation with the interim government led by Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus, assuring support for stability and democratic transition. He also promised immediate initiatives aimed at public welfare and party restructuring.
Rahman is also expected to spend time with his mother, Khaleda Zia, who has been facing health challenges in recent years.
Boost for BNP Ahead of 2026 Elections
With national elections scheduled for February 12, 2026, Rahman’s return is seen as a major boost for the BNP, which has been leading in several recent opinion polls. Political analysts believe his presence could energise the party base and consolidate opposition unity.
The event underscores the long-standing political rivalry between the BNP and the Awami League, which have alternated in power for decades.
A Defining Moment in Bangladesh Politics
Rahman’s return marks one of the most significant political developments in recent Bangladeshi history, potentially reshaping the electoral landscape ahead of the 2026 polls. Observers say the coming months will determine whether the BNP can translate this momentum into electoral success.
