Indian Railways Expands Capacity, Adds Trains to Meet Rising Passenger Demand

Over 1,000 New Trains, More General Coaches Added to Improve Capacity and Affordable Travel Across India

The Indian Railways has undertaken major capacity expansion and operational measures over the past five years to address fluctuating passenger demand and improve travel accessibility, especially for non-AC and general class passengers.

Demand-Driven Operations and Waiting List Management

Railway authorities stated that train occupancy varies between peak and lean seasons, with popular routes often running at full capacity. To manage demand, waiting lists are closely monitored and adjusted based on available accommodation. Steps such as introducing new trains, increasing frequency, extending routes, and augmenting coach capacity have been implemented.

Over 1,000 New Trains Introduced

Between 2021-22 and February 2026, Indian Railways introduced 1,024 new trains, extended 907 services, and increased the frequency of 168 trains. Additionally, 4,651 coaches were added to existing trains to boost capacity.

The expansion also focused on regional connectivity, with 444 train services introduced for the Eastern and North Eastern regions, including 75 pairs of trains serving Bihar.

Focus on Non-AC and Affordable Travel

To cater to low and middle-income passengers, Railways has significantly increased non-AC capacity. Currently, around 70% of coaches are non-AC (about 62,000 coaches), compared to 30% AC coaches.

Passenger numbers in general and unreserved coaches have surged, rising from 99 crore in 2020-21 to 651 crore in 2024-25. The number of non-AC seats now stands at approximately 54 lakh, accounting for 78% of total seating capacity.

Manufacturing Push and Coach Augmentation

Indian Railways is also manufacturing 17,000 non-AC coaches to further enhance affordable travel options. In 2024-25 alone, 1,250 general coaches were deployed in long-distance trains, while 860 coaches have been added in the current financial year up to February 2026.

Special Trains for Peak Seasons

To handle seasonal surges, Railways operates special trains during festivals and holidays. The number of special train trips increased significantly, from 40,500 in 2023-24 to 85,400 in 2024-25, with 74,800 trips recorded so far in 2025-26.

Government Statement

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared these details in a written reply in the Lok Sabha, highlighting the government’s focus on expanding capacity and ensuring affordable travel for millions across the country.
