New Fare Structure Comes Into Effect From December 26 Bookings
Indian Railways on Thursday implemented a revised passenger fare structure, marking the second fare adjustment in 2025. The new system applies only to tickets booked on or after December 26, while passengers who booked earlier will continue to travel at old rates even if their journey date falls after the revision.
No Impact on Suburban and Short-Distance Travel
According to the Ministry of Railways, the fare revision does not affect suburban train services, Monthly Season Ticket (MST) holders, or short-distance passengers. Ordinary class travel remains unchanged for journeys up to 215 kilometres, ensuring relief for daily commuters and low-income travellers.
Marginal Increase for Long-Distance Passengers
For non-AC Mail and Express trains, fares have been increased by 1 paisa per kilometre for journeys exceeding 215 kilometres. AC class passengers will see a slightly higher hike of 2 paisa per kilometre across all distances.
Officials clarified that the increase is minimal. For instance, a 500-kilometre non-AC journey will now cost only ₹10 more, with proportional increases for longer distances.
Earlier Bookings Exempted From Hike
The Railways confirmed that tickets booked prior to December 26 will not be impacted by the revised fares, regardless of the travel date. This move is aimed at avoiding inconvenience to passengers who had planned journeys in advance.
Revenue Boost to Support Rising Operational Costs
The Ministry projects that the fare adjustment will generate an additional revenue of around ₹600 crore. This is expected to help offset rising operational expenses, including manpower costs estimated at ₹1.15 lakh crore and pension liabilities of approximately ₹60,000 crore.
The additional funds will also support network expansion, safety upgrades, and infrastructure improvements across the rail system.
Second Revision in a Year, Focus on Sustainability
This fare change follows an earlier revision introduced in July 2025. Officials stressed that the latest adjustment has been designed to balance passenger affordability with the financial sustainability of Indian Railways.
Passengers Advised to Check Updated Fares
Passengers planning to travel are advised to check the revised fare details on the IRCTC website, mobile app, or at railway station counters before making reservations.
