Indian Railways Revises Ticket Cancellation Rules, Refund Policy Gets Stricter

No Refund Within 8 Hours of Departure; New Rules Aim to Improve Seat Availability

Major Change in Refund Policy Announced
The Indian Railways has introduced significant changes to its ticket cancellation and refund rules, impacting millions of daily passengers across the country. The revised policy aims to streamline the process and encourage timely cancellations.

No Refund for Last-Minute Cancellations
Under the new rules, passengers cancelling their tickets within 8 hours before the train’s departure will not receive any refund. This marks a major shift from the earlier system and is expected to discourage last-minute cancellations.

Revised Refund Slabs Explained
The updated cancellation policy introduces stricter refund slabs based on timing:

  • 24 to 72 hours before departure: 25% of the fare will be deducted
  • 8 to 24 hours before departure: 50% of the fare will be deducted
  • Within 8 hours of departure: No refund will be provided

Earlier, these time brackets were more flexible, but the new rules tighten the refund structure.

Objective: Better Seat Utilisation
Railway authorities stated that the revised policy is designed to improve seat availability and ensure that vacant seats can be allotted to other passengers. It also encourages travellers to cancel tickets well in advance.

Fixed Cancellation Charges by Class
In addition to percentage-based deductions, fixed cancellation charges will apply depending on the travel class:

  • First AC: ₹240
  • AC 2-tier: ₹200
  • AC 3-tier and AC Chair Car: ₹180
  • Sleeper Class: ₹120
  • Second Class (Reserved): ₹60

Important for Frequent Travellers
The new rules are particularly significant for passengers who often change travel plans at the last moment. Travellers are advised to be mindful of cancellation timelines to avoid heavy deductions or complete loss of fare.

Effective from Next Month
The revised cancellation and refund policy will come into effect from next month, making it crucial for passengers to stay informed and plan their journeys accordingly.
