Indian Railways to Switch Off Train Charging Points from 11 PM to 5 AM

Indian Railways is reportedly enforcing a night-time restriction on train charging points from 11 PM to 5 AM following a power bank explosion on a Mumbai–Howrah train, citing passenger safety concerns.

Passengers travelling by train may need to plan their mobile phone and laptop charging schedules more carefully. According to reports, the Railway Board has directed zonal railways to ensure that charging points in train coaches remain switched off between 11 PM and 5 AM as a safety precaution.

The six-hour restriction is aimed at reducing the risk of fire and other electrical incidents on trains. All zonal railway authorities have reportedly been instructed to implement the measure strictly and ensure that railway staff are aware of the safety requirements.

Why Has the Railway Board Taken This Decision?

According to reports, the move follows an incident on a Mumbai–Howrah train on October 25, 2026. A power bank reportedly exploded while a passenger was charging it, filling one of the train coaches with smoke and causing panic and inconvenience among passengers. However, a major accident was reportedly averted.

Following the incident, railway authorities have stepped up precautions regarding the use of charging points on trains. Instructions have reportedly been issued to keep charging points in all coaches switched off during the designated six-hour period and provide the necessary training to railway staff to ensure compliance.

Not a New Rule

The practice of switching off charging points during night hours is not new. A similar directive was issued on June 19, 2014. In March 2021, the Railways again instructed officials to ensure strict compliance with the rule.

The Western Railway reportedly began disconnecting the power supply to charging points during the specified hours from March 16, 2021.

What Should Passengers Do?

Passengers travelling overnight are advised to charge their mobile phones, laptops, power banks and other essential electronic devices before boarding the train or before the night-time restriction begins.

They should also avoid using damaged chargers, faulty cables or suspicious power banks while travelling. Taking these precautions can help passengers avoid inconvenience during the journey and contribute to safer train travel.
