The death toll from rain-related incidents in Kerala has risen to 15, while seven people remain missing, Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan said on Monday after reviewing the flood situation in the state.
According to the Chief Minister, Kottayam district reported three deaths, including two from the Poonjar Assembly constituency and a child who drowned after falling into a water tank.
Two people died in Ernakulam, while one death each was reported from Idukki and Muvattupuzha. Kollam recorded two fatalities, Malappuram reported four deaths, and one person each lost their lives in Kannur and Kozhikode.
Search operations are continuing for the seven missing persons. Two people are missing in Kollam, two in Kannur, one in Malappuram, and one each in Idukki and Muvattupuzha, the Chief Minister said.
As of 9 a.m. on Monday, the state government was operating 316 relief camps, providing shelter to 11,018 people displaced by heavy rain and flooding.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall on Monday and again on August 6, accompanied by strong winds of 40–50 kmph across parts of the state. Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert and follow official advisories.
Meanwhile, the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has warned of high waves ranging from 2.7 to 3.5 metres along the north Kerala coast. Fishermen and coastal residents have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea and to exercise extreme caution until weather conditions improve.
The Kerala government has intensified rescue, relief and rehabilitation efforts as heavy rain continues to affect several districts. Officials are closely monitoring the evolving weather situation, with emergency response teams remaining on standby to tackle any further rain-related emergencies.
