Speaker Resumes Chair After Motion Defeated

The Lok Sabha on Thursday rejected a no-confidence motion brought by opposition parties against Speaker Om Birla. After the motion was defeated in the House, Birla resumed the Speaker’s chair and strongly responded to the allegations made by opposition members.

Addressing the House, Birla clarified that Parliament functions not according to the wishes or privileges of any individual but strictly in accordance with established rules and parliamentary traditions.

Speaker Responds to Opposition Allegations

The opposition had alleged that Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi was not being allowed to speak in the House. Responding to these claims, Birla said that every member, regardless of position, must follow parliamentary rules and procedures while speaking in the House.

He emphasized that the Leader of the Opposition does not have any special privilege to speak on a particular issue without following the prescribed procedure.

Parliamentary Rules Apply to All Members

Birla further explained that whether it is the Prime Minister or any other minister, every member must seek prior permission under Rule 370 before raising a matter in the House. According to him, the Lok Sabha represents the sovereign will of nearly 1.4 billion citizens of India, and it is his responsibility to ensure that every member gets a fair opportunity to present their views.

He added that he has always tried to maintain balance and ensure that all members are given the chance to participate in parliamentary discussions.

Speaker Reiterates Faith in Parliamentary Democracy

The no-confidence notice against the Speaker was submitted by opposition parties on February 10, 2026. After accepting the notice, Birla had recused himself from presiding over the proceedings during the discussion on the motion.

Speaking after the motion was defeated, Birla said he has unwavering faith in parliamentary democracy and respects both support and criticism expressed during the debate.

“This chair does not belong to any individual. It represents the spirit of the Constitution and the great parliamentary traditions of our country,” he said.

Gratitude to Members for Restoring Confidence

Birla also expressed gratitude to members of the House for reaffirming their confidence in him. He assured the House that he would continue to perform his duties with complete dedication and commitment while upholding the dignity and traditions of Parliament.
