Low Pressure Active Over Bay of Bengal; Rain Likely in Odisha, Cyclone Threat Low

Rain, Thunderstorms and Humid Heat Likely Across Odisha as Low Pressure Intensifies Over Bay of Bengal

A low-pressure area remains active over the southwest Bay of Bengal and is likely to intensify into a depression in the coming days. However, weather experts have said that the possibility of a cyclone forming from the system remains low at present.

Even though the cyclone threat is minimal, Odisha is expected to experience weather disturbances due to the system. Coastal districts are likely to witness cloudy skies and light to moderate rainfall, while several interior parts of the State may experience Kalbaisakhi thunderstorms during the week.

Cyclone Formation Depends on Wind Conditions

According to weather experts, sea surface temperatures over the Bay of Bengal are currently favourable for the strengthening of the low-pressure system. However, strong wind flow in the upper atmosphere is preventing rapid intensification.

Experts stated that if the upper-level wind speed decreases, the system may strengthen further and show cyclone-like characteristics. But if the wind speed remains high, the chances of cyclone formation will remain low.

Monsoon May Arrive Early This Year

The southwest monsoon is likely to reach the Andaman region earlier than usual this year. Meteorologists have indicated that the monsoon winds may touch the Andaman Islands by the end of this week.

Normally, the monsoon reaches the Andaman region around May 20. However, the active low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal is gradually intensifying and is expected to help the monsoon advance faster than normal.

As a result, an early onset of monsoon over the Andaman Sea is now being anticipated.

Low Pressure Likely to Move Towards Tamil Nadu Coast

Weather models suggest that the low-pressure system may move towards the south and southwest direction and head closer to the Tamil Nadu coast. Later, it is expected to recurve towards Myanmar.

Due to this movement pattern, Odisha may not receive significant moisture support from the system during the week. As a result, several parts of the State are likely to experience intense heat conditions.

Heat and Humidity to Continue in Odisha

Despite the chances of scattered rain and thunderstorms, Odisha is expected to continue experiencing high temperatures and uncomfortable humid conditions over the coming days.

The combination of rising temperatures and moisture in the atmosphere is likely to trigger sultry weather, causing discomfort across many districts of the State.
