Odisha is likely to witness another spell of heavy rainfall as a low-pressure area has formed over the North Bay of Bengal and adjoining regions. Several parts of the state have already been receiving rain since Tuesday night, with heavy to very heavy showers reported at some places.
The latest weather system has developed under the influence of a cyclonic circulation over the North Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas of Bangladesh. The system is expected to enhance rainfall activity across Odisha over the next few days.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange warning for Puri, Khordha, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar and Sundargarh. These districts may experience thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds of 40–50 kmph.
A yellow warning has also been issued for Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Nayagarh, Ganjam and Gajapati, where thunderstorms and winds of 30–40 kmph are likely.
Rainfall is expected to intensify from September 10, with heavy rain possible in several areas between September 10 and 12.
The renewed spell of rain comes after recent flooding affected several districts, although conditions had improved following a reduction in rainfall. Authorities are likely to closely monitor rivers, drains and low-lying areas as continuous rainfall could lead to waterlogging, local flooding and disruption of road connectivity.
Meteorological forecasts also indicate the possibility of two low-pressure systems developing over the Bay of Bengal during September, raising concerns over further wet spells in Odisha.
