Major Cabinet Reshuffle Likely in Centre Ahead of 2027 Elections

Sources indicate a possible Union Cabinet reshuffle between June 15–18, with major portfolio changes, new inductions, and increased representation for NDA allies ahead of crucial 2027 elections.

A major reshuffle in the Union Council of Ministers is likely next month, with sources indicating that a cabinet expansion may take place between June 15 and 18. The proposed changes are being seen as part of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) broader strategy to strengthen its organisational and political structure ahead of key state elections in 2027.

According to sources, more than 12 ministers, including several Ministers of State, could be dropped or reassigned portfolios in the upcoming exercise.

Focus on Political Strategy and Electoral Preparation

The reshuffle is expected to be driven by political considerations, as the BJP leadership prepares for upcoming Assembly elections in multiple states, including Uttar Pradesh and Punjab.

Party insiders suggest that at least two Cabinet ministers and three Ministers of State may be removed from the Council of Ministers. Additionally, one senior Cabinet minister is likely to be assigned a key organisational responsibility in a politically crucial southern state.

The reshuffle may also result in changes across 10–12 ministries, with several ministers expected to receive new portfolios.

Alliance Partners Likely to Gain Representation

Sources indicate that NDA allies, including JD(U), TDP, NCP, and RLAM, are likely to gain representation in the Union Cabinet expansion. Some alliance partners may be inducted as Ministers of State, while one or two could be elevated to Cabinet rank.

The move is seen as an attempt to strengthen coalition dynamics and ensure broader regional representation within the government.

BJP Continues Organisational Restructuring

The BJP has already begun organisational changes in several states by appointing new state presidents as part of its restructuring exercise.

Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary has been appointed as the BJP state president for Uttar Pradesh, while Minister of State for Corporate Affairs and Road Transport Harsh Malhotra has been named Delhi BJP president.

These organisational changes are expected to align with upcoming cabinet adjustments, with new faces from both Houses of Parliament likely to be inducted into the Council of Ministers.

Further State-Level Leadership Changes Expected

The party is also considering appointing a Cabinet minister as Karnataka BJP president. In Manipur, preparations are underway to announce a new state unit chief.

Sources also suggest that the BJP may facilitate representation for Manipur in the Union Cabinet through the Rajya Sabha route.

Several ministers whose Rajya Sabha terms are nearing completion by the end of this year or early 2027 may be shifted to organisational roles.

Major Ministries Likely to See Changes

A wide range of key ministries are expected to witness reshuffles, including Railways, Finance, Corporate Affairs, Coal, Textiles, Information & Broadcasting, Electronics & IT, Rural Development, Chemicals & Fertilizers, Cooperation, Fisheries, Jal Shakti, Agriculture, Environment, and Law.

Some departments may receive dedicated Cabinet-level ministers instead of additional charge arrangements, indicating a possible expansion of the Council of Ministers.

Regional and Caste Balance in Focus

Party sources suggest that the reshuffle will also take into account regional and social representation. Discussions are underway regarding Cabinet positions for NDA allies in Bihar, as well as adjustments based on caste and regional balance within the ruling coalition.

The BJP is expected to prioritise experienced leaders, organisational veterans, and representatives from key social groups while finalising the new ministerial team.
