Odisha’s flagship women’s empowerment initiative, Mission Shakti, is set to undergo a major transformation. The program will soon introduce new uniforms, official ID cards, and smartphones for its members, aiming to boost pride, digital access, and efficiency for Self-Help Group (SHG) women across the state.
New Uniforms Celebrate Odia Pride
Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida announced that the new uniforms will be launched on April 1, coinciding with Utkal Divas.
-
The uniforms are designed with input from local artisans.
-
They aim to reflect “Odia Asmita” (Odia pride) and provide a distinct identity to SHG women.
-
This marks a shift from the traditional cream saree with green border or pink-and-blue combinations that members have worn for years.
The updated attire is intended to instill unity, confidence, and visibility for women participating in Mission Shakti.
Digital Empowerment: Smartphones for Community Resource Persons
A significant part of the upgrade involves providing around 46,000 Community Resource Persons with smartphones.
-
Devices will enable access to online training and business tips.
-
Members can now manage digital payments and government schemes more efficiently.
-
This step aims to simplify the work of SHG leaders and promote digital literacy in rural areas.
Official ID Cards to Facilitate Transactions
Alongside the digital boost, official ID cards will be issued to Mission Shakti members.
-
These IDs will improve interactions with banks, government offices, and financial institutions.
-
They are expected to streamline transactions, enhance transparency, and foster trust among SHG members.
Boosting Women’s Economic Power
Deputy CM Pravati Parida emphasized that these upgrades are part of the BJP government’s commitment to women’s empowerment.
-
Recently, over 2.80 lakh SHGs received ₹197 crore in interest refunds directly into their accounts.
-
The new initiative is expected to energize Mission Shakti and help rural women shape their own economic futures.
Blending Modern Tools with Local Identity
At its core, the Mission Shakti makeover combines technology, financial inclusion, and cultural pride. By providing digital tools, visible identity, and artisan-designed uniforms, the initiative strengthens the grassroots empowerment of women while celebrating Odisha’s unique cultural heritage.
This transformation positions Mission Shakti as a model for rural women’s empowerment programs in India, showcasing how modern tools and local pride can work hand in hand.
