From Triumph to Turmoil
India’s Asia Cup 2025 victory has been overshadowed by a diplomatic and cricketing dispute involving PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi. Known as the “villain of the final,” Naqvi’s refusal to hand over the trophy to the BCCI has sparked outrage, with the BCCI threatening to escalate the matter to the ICC if the issue is not resolved promptly.
Naqvi: From Journalism to Politics
Naqvi began his career in media, working at CNN in the early 2000s before founding City42, Pakistan’s first 24/7 news channel. A graduate in journalism from Ohio University, he transitioned to politics in the late 2010s, joining the PML-N party. His rapid ascent saw him become Chief Minister of Punjab in 2022, PCB chairman in February 2024, and later ACC president. Today, he also serves as Pakistan’s Interior Minister, a position that has expanded both his influence and controversies.
The Dubai Incident
The Dubai International Stadium final saw India claim its ninth Asia Cup title in a thrilling five-wicket win over Pakistan. As per the rules, the trophy should have been presented by Naqvi. However, India captain Suryakumar Yadav declined to accept it from him, citing trust issues. Ignoring BCCI requests for the Emirates Cricket Board vice president Khalid Al Jarouni to step in, Naqvi took the trophy and prizes to his hotel, sparking the ongoing dispute.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia warned:
“We will not tolerate such childish behaviour,” and confirmed the issue will be raised at the ICC Dubai conference next month.
Controversies Surrounding Naqvi
Naqvi’s past adds fuel to the controversy. In 2009, he was implicated in a bribery scandal involving 3.5 million rupees. During his tenure as Punjab Chief Minister, allegations included election rule violations and irregular official transfers. A 2024 audit raised questions about PCB embezzlement of 6.5 billion rupees while Naqvi reportedly enjoyed comforts totaling 4.17 million rupees. Despite these controversies, his media expertise and political backing continue to keep him in the spotlight.
Beyond Cricket: A Symbol of Tension
The trophy row now represents more than a cricket dispute—it reflects the broader strained relations between the two cricket boards and nations. Whether Naqvi will yield or the matter escalates at the ICC remains uncertain, leaving India’s champions celebrating without their silverware.
