The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has revised its earlier forecast regarding the arrival of the southwest monsoon in Kerala. While an initial prediction suggested an earlier onset, updated analysis indicates that the monsoon is now likely to reach Kerala between June 2 and June 4.
IMD Revises Earlier Monsoon Forecast
The IMD had previously indicated that the monsoon could arrive around May 26 this year. However, the latest assessments show that the conditions required for the official onset of the monsoon have not yet been fully met as of Monday.
Officials clarified that the formal declaration of monsoon onset is made only after specific meteorological criteria are satisfied.
Monsoon’s Importance for India’s Rainfall
The southwest monsoon typically reaches Kerala first and then advances northward across the country. It contributes nearly 70% of India’s annual rainfall, making it a critical factor for agriculture and water resources.
Pre-Monsoon Rains Already Underway in Kerala
Even before the official onset, Kerala has already begun experiencing pre-monsoon rainfall. Heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms have been reported in several districts.
Yellow Alert Issued in Multiple Districts
The IMD has issued a yellow alert for heavy rain and thunderstorms in several districts, including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, and Ernakulam. Authorities have advised caution as weather conditions remain unstable.
Monsoon Intensity May Be Uncertain Initially
According to the latest weather analysis, the initial intensity of the monsoon could remain unclear even after its arrival. Meteorologists continue to monitor evolving atmospheric conditions closely.
With pre-monsoon rains already active and revised forecasts in place, Kerala is expected to officially welcome the southwest monsoon in early June, marking the beginning of India’s crucial rainy season.
