Warm Welcome at Bhubaneswar Airport
Biju Janata Dal (BJD) president and former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik returned to Bhubaneswar on Saturday, 12 July 2025, following a successful cervical spine surgery in Mumbai. Landing at around 1:00 p.m. at the Biju Patnaik International Airport, Patnaik was greeted with a grand reception by a large crowd of party supporters and leaders waving BJD flags and chanting slogans in his honour.
Successful Treatment in Mumbai
Patnaik had been undergoing treatment for cervical arthritis at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai. Under the care of eminent orthopedic surgeon Dr. S. Rajasekaran and with guidance from Dr. Ramakant Panda and other specialists, Patnaik underwent surgery on 22 June. He made a full recovery and was discharged on 7 July. The veteran leader had broken his usual silence on personal matters by announcing his treatment via a post on X, where he also conveyed his prayers to Lord Jagannath and best wishes for the people of Odisha.
Statewide Support and Prayers
News of Patnaik’s surgery sparked a wave of concern and goodwill throughout Odisha. Supporters and citizens flooded social media with messages and prayers, demonstrating that Patnaik’s popularity endures despite the BJD’s electoral defeat in the 2024 assembly elections. Saturday’s celebratory atmosphere at the airport and the procession to Naveen Niwas, his official residence, further reaffirmed the deep-rooted affection the people of Odisha hold for their long-serving leader.
BJP CM’s Message of Goodwill
Even political opponents showed solidarity during Patnaik’s medical leave. Odisha Chief Minister and BJP leader Mohan Charan Majhi publicly wished Patnaik a speedy recovery and prayed to Lord Jagannath on his behalf. During Patnaik’s absence, BJD vice-president Debi Prasad Mishra along with a 15-member committee managed party affairs, ensuring continuity in operations.
Poised for a Political Comeback
Patnaik’s return comes at a crucial time as the BJD adapts to its new role in opposition after ruling the state for two decades. Though expected to resume responsibilities gradually, his comeback has already sparked renewed energy within the party. Supporters believe the leader’s health recovery marks the beginning of a fresh chapter in Odisha’s political landscape—one where Naveen Patnaik may yet again play a central role.
