NDA Prepares Seat-Sharing Formula for Bihar Assembly Elections

JDU Likely to Get Slight Edge Over BJP in Seat Allocation

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has begun finalizing its seat-sharing arrangement for the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections, scheduled for October–November 2025. Early indications suggest that the Janata Dal (United) [JDU] may contest more seats than its key ally, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), following the pattern set during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Seat Allocation Likely to Mirror Lok Sabha Formula

According to NDA sources, out of Bihar’s 243 Assembly seats, JDU is expected to contest 102–103 constituencies, while the BJP will likely be allotted 101–102. The remaining 40 seats are to be distributed among the alliance’s smaller partners—Chirag Paswan-led Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), Jitan Ram Manjhi’s Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM), and Upendra Kushwaha’s Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM).

Smaller Allies to Get Strategic Share

Among the smaller NDA allies, LJP is set to gain the most, with an estimated 25–28 seats, supported by its performance and presence in the Lok Sabha with five MPs. HAM is expected to be given 6–7 seats, while RLM is likely to contest in 4–5 constituencies.

Surveys Driving Seat Distribution and Candidate Selection

Sources reveal that the BJP has conducted extensive internal surveys across all Assembly segments in Bihar. These findings are playing a crucial role not only in determining seat allocation but also in selecting the most viable candidates. The performance in these surveys is also believed to be linked with potential roles in the upcoming NDA Cabinet.

Early Candidate Announcement on the Cards

Given past successes in Haryana, Maharashtra, and Delhi, the BJP is likely to announce candidates early in Bihar as well. This proactive strategy is part of a broader plan to maintain control, strengthen the campaign’s direction, and ensure alliance unity.

Elections Set for October–November

With elections due later this year, the NDA is carefully considering the unique political landscape of Bihar. The seat-sharing discussions and early groundwork reflect a coordinated effort to preserve alliance stability and maximize electoral advantage.
