Post-Pandemic Revival Brings Hope
The Odia film industry, which suffered a severe setback during the COVID-19 pandemic, began showing signs of revival around 2022. Films like Daman emerged as game changers, breaking box office records and earning nearly ₹5 crore. The film received widespread appreciation from critics and audiences alike, and was even dubbed into Hindi, expanding its reach.
Following this, Pratikshya also performed well, reinforcing confidence in the industry. In 2024, actor Anubhav Mohanty’s action thriller Karma collected over ₹6.5 crore. The biggest breakthrough came in 2025 with Bou Buttu Bhuta, which crossed ₹20 crore and gained national attention. Similarly, Ananta also made a strong impact.
Structural Challenges Continue to Hinder Growth
Despite these successes, the Odia film industry still lags behind other regional industries in India. Experts point out that lack of originality in storytelling and repetitive shooting styles in past decades alienated audiences.
One major issue is infrastructure. The iconic Kalinga Studio, which was damaged in the 1999 super cyclone, has been modernized but is yet to be fully operational. The delay in handing it over to the Odisha Film Development Corporation (OFDC) has caused inconvenience to filmmakers, who continue to struggle for proper shooting facilities.
Budget Constraints and Limited Promotion
Low budgets remain a significant concern. A large portion—around 25–30%—is spent on lead actors, leaving limited funds for production quality and promotion. As a result, many films fail to reach a wider audience due to poor marketing.
Additionally, the lack of cinema halls in several districts restricts box office growth, making it difficult for films to generate higher revenue.
Industry Voices Call for Reform
Actor Babushan Mohanty highlighted that while Odisha has talent and scenic locations, financial limitations and smaller audience size impact earnings. Efforts are now being made to dub Odia films into multiple languages and release them on OTT platforms.
Meanwhile, a meeting led by Siddhanta Mahapatra discussed reforms, including better promotion and policy support. However, stakeholders believe stronger government intervention is essential for sustained growth.
