Mohan Majhi’s Vision: India-US Deal to Boost Odisha’s Blue Economy and Artisan Livelihoods

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi says tariff cuts will boost seafood, handloom, and artisan exports

Odisha’s export sector is poised for a major boost as an upcoming India-US trade agreement promises to slash American tariffs on key Indian goods. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi called the deal a transformative moment for the state, particularly for seafood and handloom exports, which could see growing demand in US markets.

Seafood Industry to Reap Big Benefits

The agreement is expected to benefit Odisha’s blue economy, with prawns, fish, and other seafood from the state’s coastline gaining easier access to American buyers. Odisha exports around Rs 4,700 crore worth of prawns annually, nearly half of which go to the US. Districts such as Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, and Ganjam are set to see positive impacts, with fishermen and aquafarmers likely to enjoy higher incomes and steady growth.

Majhi emphasized that the tariff cuts provide a much-needed respite for an industry that was hit hard by last year’s US tariff hike, signaling renewed momentum for Odisha’s marine exports.

Handloom and Textile Exports Gain Ground

The deal isn’t just about seafood. Odisha’s handloom textiles and readymade garments are expected to benefit from lower duties, opening opportunities for weavers and artisan communities to compete globally.

“Our traditional weaves will create fresh trends in global fashion,” Majhi said, underlining how the agreement is both an economic and cultural win for Odisha.

Background and Significance

The breakthrough follows intense negotiations between India and the US. President Donald Trump announced the tariff cut, lowering duties from 50 per cent to 18 per cent, which had previously hindered trade after being imposed as countermeasures related to India’s oil imports from Russia.

With the agreement nearing signature, Odisha is preparing for a new chapter that blends traditional industries with global opportunities, positioning the state as a key player in both marine exports and artisan goods markets.
