Odisha’s agriculture sector has achieved yet another historic milestone. For the first time, Colocasia grown in the state has been exported to Ireland, along with Dhenkanal’s famous green papaya. This marks a significant transformation in Odisha’s journey from being an importer to establishing itself as a global exporter of fresh vegetables.
First Consignment to Ireland
A total of 100 kg of Colocasia and 320 kg of green papaya were exported from Odisha to Ireland via the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata. The achievement has been made possible under the leadership of the Directorate of Horticulture, Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Empowerment, with support from the Gates Foundation and technical coordination by Palladium.
Farmers’ Collective Driving Change
At the heart of this success is Saptasajya Agro Producer Company of Dhenkanal, a farmer-producer organization that has emerged as a symbol of collective strength of small and marginal farmers. The organization has been working tirelessly to ensure fair prices for farmers’ produce while boosting the global demand for Odisha’s agricultural products.
By exporting high-quality Colocasia to Ireland for the very first time, alongside papaya, the FPO has achieved another milestone in its mission to build a prosperous agricultural economy.
Odisha Produce in Global Markets
Since 2024, under the leadership of the Agriculture Department and coordination by Palladium, over 140 metric tons of fresh vegetables and fruits have been exported from Odisha to 10 international markets. These exports have enabled farmers to secure 40% to 62% higher value for their produce compared to local sales.
Inspiration for Farmers Across the State
This successful export initiative is more than a trade achievement—it provides a global platform for the aspirations of Odisha’s farmers. It will not only ensure fair pricing and strengthen self-reliance among farmers but also inspire other FPOs and cultivators across the state to embrace global opportunities.
