Floodwaters from Chhattisgarh have increased inflow into the Hirakud reservoir, raising concerns over the flood situation downstream. As of 6 am, the reservoir level stood at 629.08 feet, with an inflow of 6,17,308 cusecs. Around 4,96,602 cusecs were being released through 28 gates. With inflow continuing to rise, more gates may be opened if required.
Fourth Flood Hits Mahanadi Basin
The rising Mahanadi has triggered the fourth flood situation in the river this year, affecting several low-lying areas. In Banki, floodwater has entered vulnerable areas, while around four feet of water is flowing over the Huluhula bridge, disrupting communication. Six panchayats have reportedly been cut off, while large areas of farmland remain submerged.
Floodwater has also entered the Bilipada-Talabasta main road in Dhamapada block. More than three feet of water is flowing over the Sukhuakhela and Shimilipur-Kainianala stretches, affecting vehicular movement.
Flood Situation Severe in Balasore and Bhadrak
Balasore is facing flooding in the Subarnarekha, Budhabalanga, Jalka and Son rivers following three days of continuous rain. Several villages in Bhograi remain waterlogged, with roads, homes and panchayat offices submerged.
In Bhadrak, flooding in the Baitarani, Salandi and other rivers has affected all seven blocks. More than two lakh people have been impacted. So far, 52,851 people have been evacuated, while cooked food is being served through 72 centres. Eighteen medical teams and six veterinary teams have also been deployed.
South Odisha Also Affected
Flood conditions have also worsened in parts of southern Odisha. Nabarangpur’s Kosagumuda area has witnessed waterlogging, with rescue operations continuing under the zero-casualty objective.
In Boudh, rising Mahanadi waters have submerged a bridge connecting Aalati Ghat and Siddha Hanuman Temple, disrupting communication and increasing concern among residents in low-lying areas.
